Frequently asked questions

How should invoices be numbered?

Every invoice needs a unique number, and the numbers should run in sequence. The 'Next invoice' button adds one to the number and keeps your details.

What must a UK invoice include?

According to GOV.UK: a unique number, your company name, address and contact details, the customer's name and address, a clear description of what you are charging for, the date of supply, the invoice date and the amounts. A limited company uses its full name as on the certificate of incorporation.

What changes if I am VAT registered?

A full VAT invoice also shows your VAT number, the quantity, unit price, VAT rate and amount excluding VAT of each line, the total excluding VAT and the total VAT. If the invoice is not in sterling, the VAT total is also shown in sterling (HMRC VAT Notice 700/21).

Is my information stored?

No. The invoice is prepared in your browser and the PDF is created on your device; nothing is sent to our servers. You can save a draft as a .json file and open it later with 'Open draft'.

Should my US company add sales tax?

Sales tax is set by the states; whether it applies and at what rate depends on the state and on what you sell. The tool only applies the rate you enter; decide it with your accountant.

The tools give general information, not legal, tax or accounting advice. Rules change; check the official sources for the latest position or talk to us.
