ITIN

What is an ITIN and when do you need one?

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is the personal tax ID the IRS issues to people who need a US taxpayer number but aren't eligible for an SSN.

Your own tax number

Your personal US tax number, separate from your company's EIN.

Tax returns and reporting

Required for non-US persons with a US tax filing or reporting obligation.

Financial platforms

Some banks, payment providers and marketplaces may ask for it as your personal tax number.

Scope

What's included?

  • Clarifying your basis for applying (a tax return or an IRS-recognised exception)
  • Reviewing and organising your documents against IRS rules
  • Preparing the application file: Form W-7 and the supporting documents
  • Submission guidance so your documents reach the IRS the right way
  • IRS process support if the IRS asks for more information

Documents

What we need, what you receive

What we need from you

  • Your passport (the only document the IRS accepts on its own; otherwise two documents are needed)
  • Your contact and address details
  • A tax return or exception documents, depending on your basis for applying
  • Your company's formation document, if any

What you receive

  • Completed Form W-7 application file
  • Submission and follow-up guide
  • ITIN assignment notice from the IRS (CP565)
  • All documents in your dashboard

The IRS sends notice CP565 when the ITIN is assigned, or CP566 if it needs more information. We're with you either way.

Transparency

Good to know

IRS processing time

The IRS asks you to allow 7 weeks for it to notify you of your application status; 9–11 weeks in tax season (15 January–30 April) or if you apply from overseas.

Return of your documents

The IRS mails original documents back to the address on your W-7 and says this can take up to 60 days.

Notarised copies aren't accepted

The IRS needs originals or copies certified by the issuing agency; notarised copies aren't accepted. Verification through a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) is also possible.

What an ITIN doesn't do

An ITIN doesn't authorise work, doesn't change your immigration status and doesn't entitle you to Social Security benefits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

No. The EIN belongs to your company; the ITIN is your personal tax number.
