What is a SIC code?
Standard Industrial Classification code
Short answer
A SIC code tells Companies House what a UK company does. It is chosen at incorporation, checked in every confirmation statement and can be changed there.
Explained
Companies House publishes a condensed list based on the SIC 2007 classification and asks you to use only codes from that list when filing; a code that is not on it can lead to the filing being rejected.
Even a dormant or non-trading company must give an appropriate SIC code; there are codes for those cases too.
Good to know
- If your business activity changes, you can update the code with your next confirmation statement.
- Pick the code that best describes your activity; if in doubt, check the Companies House list.
